Welcome to San Diego City Schools. In 1999-2000 the district will serve some 141,000 students in 180 schools.
The average class size in kindergarten through third grade is 20; Grades 4-6 (elementary) is 32 students, 34 at the middle level and 35 at the high school level.
California public schools are free. There are no charges for books or regular classroom supplies.

As a large urban school district, we provide comprehensive preschool through grade twelve education for a culturally and ethnically diverse student population, including students who may be limited and non-English speaking. There are 26 child development centers, 115 elementary schools, 23 middle level schools, 16 senior high schools and 21 alternative schools. Eight are charter schools.
